Home Outdoor BBQ Area Roof Replacement
This project involved the complete replacement of a tiled roof over an outdoor BBQ and entertaining area after the existing roof timbers had deteriorated and reached the end of their usable life.
Although a roof can sometimes appear reasonably serviceable from the outside, problems with the underlying timber structure aren’t always visible until the tiles and coverings are removed.
On this project, the roof needed more than a simple repair. The existing covering was stripped away to expose the roof structure, revealing the condition of the ageing timbers underneath.
Existing Roof Stripped Back
The existing roof tiles, battens and roofing materials were carefully removed so that the supporting structure could be properly inspected.
As the photographs show, once everything was stripped back, the original timber framework was fully exposed.
Years of age and moisture had taken their toll, with sections of the timber deteriorating and no longer providing the sound structural base required for the roof.
At this stage, simply replacing the tiles would only have covered up the underlying problem.
Rotten Roof Timbers Replaced
With the roof stripped back, the deteriorated timber could be removed and the roof structure rebuilt as required.
This is an important part of this type of roofing work. The finished tiles are only as good as the structure supporting them, so damaged or rotten timber needs to be dealt with properly before the new roof covering is installed.
The work provided a sound new structure and a solid base for the replacement tiled roof.
New Tiled Roof Installed
Once the timber work had been completed, the roof was rebuilt and the tiled covering installed.
Careful attention was also given to the junction between the pitched roof and the adjoining brick wall, including the installation and detailing of the lead flashing to protect this vulnerable area against water ingress.
The completed roof restores both the appearance and weather protection of the outdoor BBQ area while retaining a traditional tiled finish that suits the surrounding property.

More Than Just a Roof Repair
This project is a great example of why it’s important to investigate the cause of a roofing problem rather than simply repairing what can be seen from outside.
Once the tiles were removed, the extent of deterioration within the original roof structure became clear.
Replacing the damaged timbers before rebuilding the roof means the customer now has a properly constructed and weatherproof roof over their outdoor BBQ and entertaining area, rather than a short-term repair hiding older problems underneath.
The finished result looks completely at home against the existing property while providing a much stronger and more dependable roof structure.
