Heritage Slate Roof Repairs – Farnham, Surrey
We recently completed specialist slate roof repair works on a period property in Farnham, Surrey, with the building dating back to the 1600s. Projects like this require a careful balance between preserving the original character of the property while upgrading the roof to meet modern performance standards.
The existing slate roof had areas of wear, particularly around the valley and underlay, which had deteriorated over time. Our approach focused on targeted repairs and upgrades, ensuring the integrity of the roof was restored without compromising its historic appearance.
⸻
Scope of Works Completed:
* Careful strip back of selected roof sections to access failing areas
* Installation of new high-performance roofing felt, improving the waterproof barrier beneath the slates
* New treated timber battens fitted to ensure proper alignment and long-term durability
* Installation of a new valley system, providing improved drainage and preventing water ingress at a critical junction
* Replacement of damaged and worn slates using Grade A Spanish slate, carefully matched and blended with the existing roof
* Retention and reinstallation of sound original slates to maintain the property’s character and consistency
⸻
The Result:
The completed works have significantly improved the performance and lifespan of this historic roof while maintaining its traditional appearance. The new valley and felt system ensure the roof is now fully watertight, while the use of high-quality Spanish slates allows for a seamless finish that respects the age and style of the property.
This type of project highlights the importance of using experienced roofing specialists when working on period and heritage buildings in Farnham and across Surrey.
